Harbor Town

2026 · 1 drawing · 34 × 22 in · Drawn for a pen plotter

A harbor town drawn for a 34 × 22 inch sheet (863.6 × 558.8 mm). It has 18 blocks in three rows of six, 63 buildings, connected streets, and a curved quay with four piers, ten boats, a slipway and a breakwater with a lighthouse. Thirty-six people appear in 18 situations, such as carrying a canoe, mending a net or buying fish. Adults are 10 mm tall. The A4 detail on the drawing page is cut from the full sheet at the same scale.

A planner lays out the streets and blocks and gives each of the 63 buildings a footprint. Nine building families give different rooflines and frontages: cottages, saltboxes, cafés, sail lofts, chandleries, a customs house, a warehouse, a smokehouse and a boathouse. Each entrance connects to a street without crossing another building. The program builds each building from 3D edges and surfaces, projects them straight into vector paths and removes hidden strokes before export. There is no Blender step and no raster artwork in the buildings.

Ochre hatching, with strokes 0.9 mm apart, gives the roofs their tone, and blue hatching marks cast shadows on the ground. Other inks draw the water, boat trim, awnings and foliage. Outlines are 0.25 mm graphite and the people are a finer 0.15 mm graphite. All of the shading is hatching made of plotted lines. The SVG has no fills, clipping masks, raster images or fonts.

The people started as three illustration sheets made with an image generation tool, plus a fourth made to fix the canoe group, whose first version had the canoe passing through one of the carriers. The sheets were traced into single-line pen paths. In the town, every group stands on open ground outside the buildings and keeps at least 88% of its line length visible.

It is still a study. The inland streets have fewer people than the harbor, the repeated block layout shows, and walls don't get shadow hatching yet.

[Chris to confirm: has Harbor Town been plotted? Nothing in wimmelbilder4 records a plot, and TOWN.md says no physical plot has been evaluated yet. Until you confirm, the site shows no plot status.]
